Published September 27, 2004

LARKANA, Sept 26: The world famous scholar Edward Said was remembered by the South Asian Centre for Social Awareness and Development on his first death anniversary observed at the Latif Nizamani Labour Hall here on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, executive director of the centre, Amanullah Shaikh, highlighted the life and works of Mr Said. He said that Mr Said had not only been a champion of the Palestinian cause but had also symbolized intellectual resistance against the injustice committed at international level.

Commenting on the local scene, he deplored that the intellectuals and literary figures of Sindh had fallen prey to expediency, opportunism and timidity so their writings were void of any utility for the society.

Liaquat Ali Rajper said that Mr Said had great concern for the oppressed human beings. Syed Mehdi Shah stressed the need for studying Said's works to understand and follow his mission.

Asghar Ali Shaikh said that the people of Sindh were ideologically linked with Mr Said. Faqir Mohammad Ibrahim Soomro said that Mr Said's struggle for the rights of Palestinians was a radiant example for the people of Sindh. -APP
