HYDERABAD, Aug 12: Islami Jamiat-i-Tuleba activists staged an "Ideology of Pakistan" march from the Muslim Science College to the press club here on Thursday.
They carried banners and placards inscribed with slogans of "secular syllabus and denationalization of educational institutions unacceptable" and "remove Federal Education Minister Zobaida Jalal".
The students also set ablaze the US flag outside the press club. Speaking on the occasion, MPA Abdul Rehman Rajput said ideological frontiers of Pakistan were under attack from "secular terrorism". District Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal president Maulana Abdul Waheed Qureshi said people would resist any move to harm the Islamic ideology of the country.
SPLA: The Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association, Hyderabad region, has opposed denationalization of educational institutions and demanded that the proposal should be shelved.
A meeting of the association held here on Thursday under the chairmanship of Prof Sher Khan Selero observed that denationalization of the institutions was aimed at depriving poor students of their right to get education.
It alleged that the education system in Sindh was being destroyed under a conspiracy. The meeting demanded that a covering notification in respect of accepted demands of teachers should be issued and promotion of 507 teachers under the four-tier formula be notified immediately.
It pointed out that 501 posts of college teachers in the province were lying vacant for six years. It regretted that due to red-tapism, a notification in respect of 400 cases, disposed of by the departmental promotion committee eight months back, had not been issued as yet. Similarly, promotion cases of 140 directors of physical education and libertarians had not been decided.
The meeting condemned what it called an irresponsible statement of a spokesman for the Sindh education minister and said the SPLA neither was a trade union nor it had a political agenda.
The association said teachers would continue struggle for their rights. It announced to observe a black day in the province on Aug 16 against "anti-education" policies of the government.
