OKARA, July 28: Renala Khurd police arrested on Wednesday Anjuman-i-Mazareen's local unit president Shaukat Ali for a case registered against him several months ago.

Reacting to the action, hundreds of tenants of Renala Khurd farms gathered at Chak 21/1-RB and blocked traffic on the main road. Led by Nadeem Ashraf, they demanded the release of Mr Ali at the earliest.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Ashraf said the administration had backed out of its promise with the tenants that no one would be arrested for the old cases. The arrest of the tenants' leader had spoiled the peaceful atmosphere on the farms, he added.

The police officials, however, negotiated with the protesting farmers and got the passage clear for traffic. Meanwhile, AMP spokesman Noor Nabi claimed in a press release that the military farms' administration had violated the agreement and yet not released the women tenants, besides opposing the bail applications lying with court.

He said the tenants would launch a fresh protest movement if the district administration did not honour its commitment.

DEMAND: A union council Naib Nazim and villagers have demanded of District Nazim Syed Sajjad Haider and DCO Syed Iftikhar Husain Babar to get a girls' school building vacated from illegal occupants.

Muhammad Mansha and Muhammad Ashiq had allegedly grabbed the building of the Government Girls' Primary School at Chak 13/1-L (Renala Khurd tehsil). Villagers had appealed to the district government to take action against the culprits, but to no avail.

KILLED: A landlord was shot dead while three others injured by their rivals over a piece of agricultural land on Tuesday night. Reports said Khanewal-based landlord Riaz Ahmad had a piece of agricultural land at Chak 39/4-L (Okara), which he had given to Liaquat Ali of Chak 46/5-L on lease. Liaquat got stay order against the vacation of the land due to which Riaz bore a grudge against him.

Riaz, along with his accomplices Arshad, Sajjad and Iqbal, reached Chak 39-4/L to take possession of land. Liaquat and his three friends also came there and shot dead Riaz and injured his accomplices. They were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital. Police have registered a case.
