LAHORE, July 18: By-polls to five seats of Nazims and 26 Naib Nazims of 31 union councils in 31 districts of the Punjab were held peacefully on Sunday as no untoward incident was reported during the polling.
Polling began at 8am and continued till 5pm without any break. Voters were asked to produce their national identity cards to cast votes. To ensure a fair and transparent polling process, the election commission had banned the entry of all irrelevant people, including ministers, advisers, district, tehsil and union council Nazims, and government officials except the polling staff.
No person was allowed to canvass within 200 metres radius of any polling station. According to preliminary results of seven seats of Nazims and Naib Nazims in Lahore, Rizwan Yousaf won from UC-31, Zulfikar Gadhi from UC-86, Muhammad Qadhafi from UC-90, Waheed Imran Gill from UC-105, Chaudhry Mujeeb Alam from UC-108, Muhammad Kashif from UC-117, Rana Mahboob Husain from UC-131 and Akmal Butt from UC-137.
BAHAWALPUR: Chaudhry Abdul Jabbar, a PML nominee, was declared elected unofficially Yazman tehsil Nazim. Mr Jabbar, belonging to the district Nazim Tariq Cheema's group, defeated PML-N's Khalid Mahmood Jajja by 181 votes.
Khalid Jajja is the son of former MNA and PML-N district president Chaudhry Mumtaz Ahmed Jajja, a strong rival of Tariq Cheema in the Yazman politics. Khalid Jajja was also supported by the PPP.
FAISALABAD: The by-polls for Naib Nazim seats in five union councils of the district were held here in peaceful atmosphere. Only five to seven per cent voters exercised their right of franchise.
In UC No 179, Tariq Mehmood was declared successful who bagged 2,291 votes while his rival Arshad Khan got 1,413 votes. Nazar Muhammad clinched the seat of Naib Nazim of UC No 228 by obtaining 1,139 votes while his opponent, Muhammad Shahid, could secure only 462 votes. In UC No 276, Tariq Mehmood won the seat by getting 1,526 votes while his rival candidate Mukhtar Ahmed bagged 814 votes.
Jawed Akhtar won the seat of UC-278 by taking 1,340 votes while the runner up candidate, Akhtar Husain, could manage 1,265 votes. In UC-280, Dr Abdul Jabbar was declared successful with 1,228 votes while his opponent candidate Sajid Manzoor boycotted the elections at the last moment.
