FAISALABAD, June 8: The local Government College University will introduce new disciplines of fine arts, fashion and textile designing.

Vice-Chancellor Dr Asif Iqbal Khan told a seminar on 'World Trade Order and its Effects on Textile Group of Pakistan' on Tuesday that efforts were being made to impart education to students on new subjects for the benefit of local industry.

Renowned industrialists 'Naeemul Haq, Javed Ashraf, Shafique Ahmed Shahzad and others also addressed the seminar and highlighted the problems being faced by the business community.

They emphasized the need for finding ways to exploit the opportunities offered by the WTO regime and meet the challenges the local textile industry would face in future.

CANAL BREACH: The standing crops were destroyed on hundreds of acres due to a breach in the Gogera Branch Canal near Samundri on Monday night. The canal developed a 10-foot breach near Chak 225 and 224-GB, which soon widened to 35 feet.

The area people failed to plug it despite all-out efforts. The functionaries of irrigation department reached the place six hours later and filled it after hectic efforts.

The area people claimed that the embankments had deteriorated due to the negligence of irrigation functionaries and routinely developed small or large breaches in the area.

ALLOCATION: A comprehensive water supply and sewerage plan has been chalked out for the city for which an amount of Rs22 million has been allocated. In a statement here on Tuesday, Wasa managing director Rasheed Ahmad Chaudhry said in the light of proposals of elected representatives and the surveys conducted by the officials concerned, dozens of schemes of water supply and drainage had been approved for different localities of the city.

He said tenders had been invited for these projects. He said a plan had also been finalized to get analyzed the water being supplied by Wasa in different localities.
