PESHAWAR, June 4: Town-III nazim Yasin Khan Khalil announced on Friday that a convention of nazims would be organized to thwart 'conspiracies' being hatched to destabilize the district and tehsil governments.

Mr Khalil told a news conference that a 'mafia', which was in habit of flouting the laws, had tried to dislodge him through a no-trust motion two days ago. However, he added, the attempt was foiled by the union council nazims and councillors who supported had him.

He accused the City Development and Municipal Department (CDMD) of meddling in the town municipal administration's affairs. He said that Hayatabad, which was part of the Town-III, had been handed over to the CDMD, a non-elected and non-representative body.

Explaining background of the no-trust move, the nazim said he believed it began on the day when owner of the Al Haj Plaza accused him of making venal demands at a news conference.

He said that the plaza owner had sought permission for a five-storey building in 1991, but the then government turned down his request on the grounds that the plot was located in a residential block. In 2002, he said, the owner tried to obtain permission from the Town-III but the request was again turned down.
