LAHORE, May 17: Lahorites had another day of over 225 power trippings and 12 major breakdowns on Monday. The officials of the Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) say that winds during the last two days encouraged kite flying that hit the distribution system.

On Sunday, areas under Lesco suffered around 350 trippings and 22 breakdowns. Both the days left the Lahorites sweating and fuming at the performance of power distributors.

"For the last many years, we have been living with such lame excuses like kite-flying and over-burdened distribution system," says a resident of Samanabad.

"Someone has to control both the factors. Instead of controlling them, Lesco officials have adopted a habit of harping on them and feel exonerated," he said. "The kind of bill that Wapda is charging hardly matches with the service it is providing to its hapless consumers," says another consumer.

"The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) fixed performance standards for the Discos which have yet to enforce. There must be a system of accountability of officials," he added. "Lack of accountability only encourages complacency among the staff of Discos and add to the woes of consumers," he lamented.
