LAHORE, May 20: Christian councillors belonging to Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Daska and Sangla Hill on Monday discussed various issues pertaining to strengthening their role as public representatives.

A conference was held under the aegis of the Justice and Peace Commission which was presided over by commission chairperson Sister Naurus Nawab.

Sister Nawab said the minority community councillors should consolidate their position in the system and play active role in improving the lot of their electorates.

The participants welcomed the restoration of joint electorate system in the country and described it a big achievement as a result of a collective struggle by the members of the minority communities.

Those who spoke at the conference, besides Sister Naurus Nawab, included Lahore region’s coordinator Rev Father Siddiq Mark Sunder, Rev Father Albert Youhana, Mahboob Sadaa, Aftab Mughal, Akram Gill, Phillips Zafar, Hanif Charles, Riaz Mahmood, Iqbal Mohsin, Padre Chaman Sardara and Zahid Noor.

Resolutions adopted on the occasion demanded that all discriminatory laws in the country be done away with, women belonging to minority communities be given representation on the reserved seats, political parties should give tickets to members of minorities for contesting election, a five per cent quota should be given to minorities in seats allocated for technocrats in the Senate and in order to make political representation of non-Muslim Pakistanis possible, the 1973 Constitution should be restored.
