PESHAWAR, May 2: Jamaat-i-Islami chief Qazi Hussain Ahmad has said any political change through a democratic process in the country will be welcomed, but the party does not believe in hatching conspiracies for changes.

"Every political change must come through constitutional means and not through undemocratic means," the JI chief said while speaking informally to newsmen here on Sunday. He said the MMA opposed changes that came through backdoor.

Asked if the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal would accord a welcome to Mian Shahbaz Sharif on his expected return to Pakistan, he said no such decision had been taken. However, he added that like any other Pakistani Mr Sharif had the right to return to the country.

The Sharifs, he said, had gone abroad on their own and the government should not stop them. But every citizen should face the law of the land. About the current wheat crisis in the NWFP, he said the matter should be resolved through dialogue, adding that irresponsible statements would generate controversies among the provinces.

He said the ongoing ban on wheat movement would affect farmers in Punjab and urged the Punjab government to lift the ban. The Jamaat chief said some elements were trying to politicise the wheat issue to create problems for the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal government in the province. He said the government should give incentives to farmers to grow more wheat to make the country self sufficient in wheat production.
