GUJRANWALA, April 16: Police on Friday uprooted a protest camp set up by the PML-N opposite the district courts here and arrested some leaders, including Ghulam Dastgir Khan, who were delivering speeches against the government.

The camp was part of the party's 10-day campaign to protest the conviction of Javed Hashmi.

Police besieged the camp and ordered the organizers to pack up. But when the party leaders continued their speeches, police stormed the camp and picked up 30 people, including Ghulam Dastgir Khan, former MNA Mahmood Bashir Virk, former MPA Abdul Rauf Mughal and district bar association president Saifullah Cheema and locked them at Satellite Town and Civil Lines police stations.

However, police released them after three hours. Later, the party leaders held a news conference at the residence of Ghulam Dastgir Khan and announced that their movement would continue till the release of Javed Hashmi.

20 FARMERS BOOKED: Over 20 farmers were booked by the police on the charge of stealing canal water in Ladheywala Warraich on Friday. According to the report, farmers breached the canal and were watering their fields.

On a complaint, the irrigation officers and the police jointly conducted a raid but all the accused managed their escape. Police have registered a case and recovered the pipes and other equipment. It is stated that the farmers have been stealing the canal water for the last several months.

FAMILY LOOTED: Highwaymen riding on a car looted a family and snatched gold jewellery from women on Sheikhupura road on Friday. According to the report, a landlord of Maju Chak was on his way to the city from Faisalabad by his van (FDR-1748) along with his family. When he reached near Qiampur village, four outlaws intercepted them and snatched cash worth Rs 15,000, a mobile phone and gold jewellery from women at gunpoint.
