KARACHI, April 15: The notorious gang leader, Arshad Pappu, made his escape along with his associates from Jehanabad when police acted to arrest him on Thursday.

Police entry into the area ensued a heavy exchange of gun fire from both sides in which a suspect was wounded. However, the gang members made their escape from the other side taking along their injured associate.

Town Police Officer SITE Imran Shaukat told Dawn, "Usually the suspects get a tip off when we go with a large force, that is why after getting a tip, a relatively small number of policemen took part in the raid."

ROBBERY: Six bandits took away gold ornaments worth millions of rupees from two jewellry shops in New Karachi on Thursday afternoon.

The area shopkeepers said that six men on three motorcycles came to two shops -Karachi Jewellers and Jawaid Goldsmith - located adjacent to each other. They went into the two shops in equal numbers and held the inmates at gunpoint.

The shopkeepers said that the armed men collected gold from the safe, jewellry sets from the displays at gunpoint and escaped. They said that they were still trying to assess the losses they had suffered.
