HARIPUR, March 25: The by-elections on 11 local government seats of eight union councils in the Haripur district would be held on March 28, officials said here on Thursday.

Some of these seats had been vacant since 2001 local government polls or had been vacated by elected representatives because of various reasons. Officials said that by-elections in Dhenda, Beer, Hattar, Rehana, Tarbela, Ghazi, Ali Khan and Pind Kamal Khan union councils would be contested by 24 contenders.

In UC Dhenda, political analysts believe there would be a tough contest post of the union council nazim while in the Beer and Hattar union councils there were four candidates contesting the nazim and naib nazim posts.

For the four peasant workers' seats, there were 14 candidates in the run while two others were in the run for minority seat from Pind Kamal Khan, Rehana, Tarbela and Ghazi.

Two candidates were vying the seat of women peasant workers seat from UC Ali Khan. Meanwhile, 12 women councilors' seats and four minority seats in different union councils had remained vacant as no one from these UCs had turned up to file nominations for a second time. Four women had, official said, returned uncontested from Pandak, Beer, Qazipur, and Baka union councils.
