INDIAN WELLS, March 15: American Andy Roddick opened with a 7-6 (7/3), 6-2 victory over fellow American Jan-Michael Gambill here Sunday to reach the third round of the US$4.9m ATP/WTA tournament.

The 21-year-old third seed, who had lost two of his three previous meetings with Gambill, blasted 21 aces in Sunday's 94-minute center-court match. Roddick had received an opening-round bye at the hardcourt event.

Roddick hit 38 winners, 10 more than Gambill. Gambill had more seven double faults to two for Roddick and made 23 unforced errors to 10 by Roddick. Roddick rebounded nicely from an surprising defeat last week to compatriot Vincent Spadea in the semi-finals of the ATP Scottsdale tournament.

Roddick reached the world number one ranking for the first time in his career at the end of the 2003 season and won his first Grand Slam title at the US Open. His best result here was an appearance in last year's quarter-finals.

Chile's Fernando Gonzalez beat Victor Hanescu of Romania to advance despite getting sick in his three-set match in 34 degrees Celsius (90 Fahrenheit) heat. Spanish teenager Rafael Nadal, Max Mirnyi of Belarus and France's Sebastien Grosjean also advanced in early matches.

On the women's side, Argentina's Gisela Dulko and American Marissa Irvin moved on.
