SUKKUR: PN to fill Sukkur Barrage pit

Published February 17, 2004

SUKKUR, Feb 16: Sindh Irrigation and Power Minister Pir Sadaruddin Rashdi visited the Sukkur Barrage and held a meeting with irrigation officers on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, he said those found responsible for the damage to the barrage would be taken to task. He said a pit that had occurred in upstream of the barrage would be filled by Pakistan Navy personnel.

The minister said a six-member team of irrigation experts had been formed to monitor the repair work, ascertain damages and carry out further technical work. Talking to journalists, Mr Rashdi supported the construction of the Sehwan Barrage and other barrages so that more land could be irrigated.

He was of the opinion that the water issue could be resolved by implementing the 1991 water accord. Replying to a question, he denied that Sindh was being deprived of its water share.

Sindh Irrigation and Power secretary Bashir Ahmad Dahar told the minister the maintenance of the barrage would require a huge amount.

KIDNAPPED: Three people were kidnapped by bandits near Dakhan the other day. Yamin Kalore, Ali Gohar Bohiro and Ehsan Bat were released when residents of a nearby village came to their rescue and offered resistance to the kidnappers.
