LAHORE, Feb 16: The City District Government has decided to ban the removal of recyclable scrap from the municipal solid waste at 200 major collection points and invite bids for grant of sorting rights to interested parties.

The CDG Solid Waste Management believes that 4,000 tons of waste being generated in the city daily contains recyclable materials like plastic, paper, glass and metals worth a million rupees.

The materials are taken out from the waste by hundreds of Afghan and nomad scavengers and sold to the trash merchants. They remove the recyclable trash on the one hand and scatter the waste all around the collection spots on the other.

The SWM believes that the entire waste generated in the city is its undisputed property and nobody has any right to remove anything from it without its consent.

District officer (planning) is, therefore, engaged in preparation of the lists of 200 major collection points from where maximum quantity of recyclable materials could be retrieved from the waste for grant of sorting rights to the interested parties.
