BADIN, Jan 6: The grower sheld a protest demonstration in front of the office of the Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority here on Tuesday on the arrival of SIDA chairman Brigadier (retd) Abdul Haq.

They were protesting against acute water shortage in the watercourses of Kadhan and other sub-divisions. Later, representatives of the growers' association, apprised the chairman of the artificial water shortage and complained that the director, SIDA, Nazeer Mughal, and other officials were not available for listening to the growers' complaints.

They alleged that due to the absence of the officials, lower staff of the authority avoided proper distribution of water. On listening to the complaints, the chairman directed the irrigation officials to be regular in their duties and redress the grievances of the growers.

RALLY: About 300 people, belonging to different walks of life, took out a rally in Kadhan town on Tuesday to protest against increase in crime rate in the district.

Led by Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party president Shahnawaz Siyal, the protesters marched through the main roads of the town and, later, staged a sit-in at a main roundabout.

The rally leaders, denouncing the assault on and killing of a minor boy, Saleem Mallah, demanded that the culprits should be arrested forthwith. They said that as many as six people had been killed in the district during the last 10 days.

The increase in heinous crimes, they said, had created fear and insecurity among the peace-loving people of the district. Businessmen and traders also closed down their business in protest.

Meanwhile, the Kadhan police claimed that they had arrested three persons in connection with the killing of the minor boy and that one of them had confessed to the crime.

TALUKA COUNCIL: The Taluka Council met here the other day under the chairmanship of convenor Ali Bux Notkani and passed a resolution against Hesco for disconnecting the power to water supply in the city.

POLICE: At least 2,000 employees of the police department are being deprived of the facility of drawing three salaries in advance from the National Bank of Pakistan as the DPO Badin is not granting permission to them.

The local police officials said that on the orders of the Sindh IG, officials in other districts were being facilitated to draw such money. They demanded that the provincial police chief should intervene in the matter and ensure that they were allowed to avail the facility.
