HYDERABAD, Feb 12: Sir C.J Institute of Psychiatry Medical Superintendent Dr. Akbar Ali Memon has said that imbalances in socio-political and economic conditions result in psychiatric disorder, which can be treated through proper treatment, sympathy and guidance.

He said at the diamond jubilee celebrations of Sir Cowasji Jehangir Institute of Psychiatry on Thursday that the hospital was also providing custodian treatment and day care treatment to the mentally-ill.

Senior psychiatrist Dr. Abdul Hameed Memon said that despite limited resources the institute was making great contribution to providing psychiatric treatment and mental health services to the rural population.

Dr Darya Khan Leghari said that the institute faced difficulty providing medicines to patients due to financial problems and added that “we are trying to get authorisation to produce FCPS doctors”.

Renowned Psychiatrist Prof Dr Syed Jamil Hussain said that the province faced shortage of psychiatrists and many districts had no psychiatrists.

He said that it was need of the hour to start a child psychiatry unit in the institute and claimed that the institute was the third biggest in South Asia, which was producing qualified psychiatrists to cope with growing number of patients.

Prof Dr Jan Mohammad Memon said that the number of psychiatric patients was increasing day by day and the doctors concerned must find a solution to the problem.

Prof Dr Musarrat Hussain said that media had helped create awareness among people about mental illness and the society had developed tolerance towards such patients.

He spoke at length on causes and cure of schizophrenia and advised people to show love and kindness to mental patients. Doctors, paramedical staff, media, social workers and community could help treat the mentally-ill, he said and added that depression was the second biggest disease in the world.

The director-general of Health Services, Dr. Abdul Sattar Korai, said that the government was fully aware of people’s health problems and was doing its best to provide healthcare to people.

He assured the hospital administration of providing full support in helping the hospital give quality treatment to patients.
