GUJRANWALA, May 14: The food department officials have suspended wheat purchase in Naushera Virkan, Naukher and Kamoki centres till the disposal of huge quantity of purchased wheat.

Dawn learnt on Tuesday that several wheat laden tractor-trollies and trucks were parked outside godowns in Kamoki and other procurement centres.

Meanwhile, farmers have condemned the policy, claiming the higher-ups had purchased wheat from the commission agents of grain market on subsidy.

They alleged the commission agents had been purchasing the wheat from them for Rs250 to 260 per 40kg instead of Rs300. The officials had provided gunny bags to the commission agents in violation of the directive of the Punjab government, they added.

The growers have demanded an impartial inquiry should be conducted against the food department officials involved in irregularities.
