Police probe death threat

TOKYO, Jan 13: Grand champion Asashoryu’s latest return has triggered more controversy after reports the Mongolian had received a death threat.

Police are investigating an alleged warning made on an Internet forum and have stepped up security around the yokozuna’s gym, media said on Tuesday.

Asashoryu’s future has been the subject of intense speculation after injuries and a ban for playing football in 2007.

His behaviour continued to raise eyebrows after he spent 10 days in a tent in the freezing Mongolian mountains as part of his rehabilitation for elbow and back injuries last year.—Reuters
