Alleged thief ‘beaten to death’

Published January 14, 2009

LAHORE, Jan 13: An alleged thief was killed after being tortured by some residents of Mohallah Saathian of Bhaati Gate on Tuesday.

Rafaqat Ali told police that an unidentified man was going upstairs at his double-storey house when his son raised an alarm. He said the family managed to overpower the thief and recovered from him some stolen valuables.

The family stared beating the man with kicks and fists outside the house. Some neighbours also gathered on the spot and subjected the man, seemed to be in 30s, to severe torture which led to his death.

Police were called out, which took the body into possession. However, Bhaati Gate SHO Naveed Azam claimed that the man, seemed to be an addict, fell from the stairs on the alarm raised by the family members. City division SP Rana Abdul Jabbar, when contacted, said it was yet to be ascertained whether the deceased was a thief.—Staff Reporter
