SUKKUR, May 13: Federal Minister for Law, Justice, Human Rights & Parliamentary Affairs, Dr Khalid Raja has said that the government was committed to hold free and impartial elections within the mandatory period set forth by the Supreme Court.
Addressing a press conference, he said that the National Reconstruction Bureau (NRB) was preparing a package of constitutional reforms which would be put for national debate.
He said that President Pervez Musharraf is more democratic than the previous rulers, and was ready to seek consultation from political parties on all major issues.
He said that the National Security Council would have an institutional role after October general election, which would discourage the trend of leg-pulling between the president and prime minister.
He said the government was trying to reach an agreement with the United States and some other countries for the extradition of criminals.
BAR ASSOCIATION: Khalid Ranjha has said that the government would strengthen the Bar and Bench relationship, as both had to play a pivotal role in the judicial system of the country.
He said that the foreign grant of 300 million dollars was in the pipeline for Pakistan, which would be utilized for improving the lower judiciary of the country.
Addressing the District Bar Association Sukkur on Monday, the minister said that a grant of 50 million dollars had already been received by the government, and advised the Bar officials to approach the respective Chief Justice of the high court to get their projects approved.
He suggested that the under-construction judicial complex, which was abandoned since 1996, could be completed with this grant.
ONE KILLED: One person was killed and a woman injured when five armed persons opened fire on them in Adam Shah Colony here on Monday.
According to details, five armed persons raided the house of Wahid Bux alias Wadan Jamali and opened fire on them.
Wadan Jamali was killed on the spot, while his wife Bano was seriously injured.
