ISLAMABAD, Dec 30: The Auditor General of Pakistan (AGP) will examine accounts of eight sports federations for the last three years on request of the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB).

An official of the PSB on condition of anonymity told Dawn on Tuesday: “We have sent a request to the AGP to look into the accounts of eight sports federations as the government has continuously funded millions of rupees during last three years.”

“We just want to ensure that taxpayers’ money is spent in the right area and there is no misuse of funds,” he said.

According to the information provided by the PSB official, the annual grants received by the federations during the last three years were: Athletics Federation of Pakistan Rs7.5 million, Cycling Rs1.7 million, Gymnastics Rs1.2 million, Handball Rs1.5 million, Kabaddi Rs1.9 million, Rowing Rs1.8 million, Swimming Rs3 million and Baseball Rs1.8 million.

When asked about special grants given by the PSB during the last three years, the official pointed out, “Athletics Federation was allotted Rs1.55 million, Cycling Rs1.5 million, Handball Rs1.6 million, Kabaddi Rs0.95 million, Rowing Rs0.75 million, Swimming Rs3 million and Baseball 0.5 million.

“It was only the Gymnastics Federation which was not injected with any special grants,” he maintained.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Sarwar, the honorary secretary of the Pakistan Kabaddi Federation, said: “Our accounts are audited every year and we have no issues with the current development.”
