Top seeds enter last-eight round

ISLAMABAD, Dec 25: Aqeel Khan, Asim Shafique, Hameed ul Haq and Tanvir Ashiq confirmed their berths in the quarter-finals of National Clay Court Tennis Championship at the PTF Complex on Thursday.

Top seed Aqeel Khan won his match against Wakeel Khan 6-2 and 6-2. Asim Shafique, second seed, toppled Rashid Malik 6-3, 6-3. Aqeel will now play Hameed-ul-Haq while Asim Shafique will face Sadan-ul-Haq in the quarter-finals on Friday.

Meanwhile, in the ladies singles event top seed Sara Mehboob, hammered Mehak Khokhar. Mehak won the first set 6-4 hitting some powerful backhand shots.

Sara made a good comeback winning the second set 7-5. She finished the game in style winning the last set 6-4.

Saba Aziz, Ushna Sohail and Sara Mansoor reached the semi-final.

Saba beat Anam Ayesha, while Sara Mansoor and Ushna Sohail got a walkover against their opponents.

Heera Ashiq, Hamza Pataudi, Jibran-ul-Haq and Faizan Khurram were among the quarter-finalists of boys’ junior U-17 category.

In men’s doubles category, Tanvir Ashiq and M. Abid Ali, Asim Shafique and Hameed-ul-Haq, Aqeel Khan and Rashid Malik and Usman Ejaz/Imran Shaukat reached the semi-final. In the boys’ U-13 quarter-final, Kashan-ul-Haq defeated Akbar Tiwana while M. Saad, Hamza and Salman bin Saleem also won their fixtures.
