KARACHI, Dec 13: Senior bureaucrat Kamal Afsar is likely to get the stewards’ nod for the post of chairmanship of the Karachi Race Club (KRC) at an electoral meeting at the KRC premises on Monday at 12noon.
Kamal, who is chairman of State Life Insurance Corporation (SLIC), is among nine stewards who were elected unopposed in the elections held after a lapse of some five years, a KRC spokesman confided to Dawn on Saturday.
The panel which had the blessings of prominent owner of racing horses, Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagara, returned unopposed without any opposition.
Only retired Colonel Mohammad Mateen had filed nomination for steward which he later withdrew. The last date for withdrawal of nomination papers was Dec 10.
There are five new faces in the nine-member committee. They include Kamal Afsar, M.R. Hussain, Syed Ismail Shah, Yousuf Ali Khan and Ali Faisal Farooq.
Kamal Farooq, Javed H. Karim, Irfan Mehdi and Tajammul H. Mirza were members of the KRC Racing Committee which now ceased to exist.
After getting elected as chairman, Kamal is likely to pick MNA Syed Sadruddin Shah Rashdi as president. It has been learnt that the latter who was chairman in the previous committee has filed nomination for the post of president.
Though the tenure of elected office-bearers was not announced but according to KRC Article of Association, their term is for one year.
Some 451 members, 286 ordinary members and 165 life members are enrolled with the KRC who have voting rights.
