BISP offices shifted to NAB building

ISLAMABAD, Nov 26: The government has shifted the offices of newly-launched Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) headquarters building, indicating that the powerful department set up by the Musharraf regime is about to be wound up.

Talking to mediapersons at the new office on Tuesday, chairperson of the programme Farzana Raja termed the shifting of the office a victory of democracy, saying: “The shifting of the office has been completed in the building where we, the politicians, were summoned and harassed by the NAB officials.”

Ms Raja was confident that NAB would be abolished in a couple of months and then the entire building would be handed over to BISP. The government has reportedly decided to dismantle NAB and put in place a similar department of accountability with a new name to deal with white collar crimes.

“I want to run this programme on a fast track and for this purpose I needed better official accommodation,” she added.

It has been learnt that NAB authorities have shown great concern over shifting of BISP offices to the bureau’s headquarters fearing the precious record of NAB could get damaged. The building of NAB headquarters belonged to the prime minister’s inspection commission till 2000.
