Landhi getting contaminated water

Published November 11, 2008

KARACHI, Nov 10: People of Zamanabad in Landhi No.4 have complained that they have been supplied with contaminated water for the past one month which is causing spread of abdominal diseases in the area. They said that residents of at least 50 houses were affected by the supply of contaminated water.

They complained that many people, particularly children and the elderly, were suffering from diarrhoea and other waterborne diseases after drinking the polluted water.

The spread of diseases might be a result of sewage water seeping into their locality’s water supplying line, they said.

They demanded of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board officials to rectify the fault without any further delay. They said they feared an outbreak of epidemic if the situation was not brought under control soon.

Although they had lodged a number of complaints with the officials of the water utility, the KWSB had not succeeded in tracing the fault responsible for the contamination of water.

The water board should immediately stop the supply of contaminated water, the area people demanded.

“The water currently being supplied to us is not only of bad odour, but also of light yellowish colour,” a resident of the locality told Dawn.

He said KWSB officials had already been shown the sample of the filthy water.

An official of the KWSB admitting the supply of contaminated water to some houses of Zamanabad area said that digging had already been started at some places of the locality to find out the cause of water contamination.
