MIRPURKHAS, Nov 6: The inmates of 4,000 residential quarters of the century-old Railway Colony are forced to live in subhuman conditions, with choked sewerage lines, overflowing gutters and heaps of garbage lying in the streets.

The drainage system in the colony has collapsed, forcing 25,000 residents to move about in filthy sewage. Heaps of garbage that eternally lie in the streets and on the roads, with nobody to lift them, have become sanctuaries for disease-carrying flies.

Railways Employees Mehnatkash Union President Abdullah Soomro alleged that the funds for carrying out repairs of the old and worn-out quarters and cleanliness were misappropriated, forcing them to continue living in unhealthy conditions.

He demanded that the federal minister for railways and higher authorities of railways take notice of their problems immediately and ensure rehabilitation of the colony.
