Euro falls against dollar, yen

LONDON, Oct 20: The euro sank against the dollar and the yen on Monday as uncertainty gripped currency markets in spite of world leaders’ steps to tackle a financial crisis and looming recession, analysts said.In late London trading, the euro sank to $1.3319 from a level of $1.3408 reached late in New York on Friday. On Monday it briefly touched a 10-day low under $1.33.

Against the Japanese currency, the dollar rose to 101.77 yen from 101.63 yen on Friday.

The dollar had fallen against the euro in early European trading on Monday after the latest banking-sector bailouts following weeks of turbulence on financial markets, but later rebounded.

In late London trade on Monday, the euro changed hands at $1.3319 against $1.3408 late Friday, at 135.47 yen (136.33), 0.7773 pounds (0.7756) and 1.5333 Swiss francs (1.5249).

The dollar stood at 101.77 yen (101.63) and 1.1518 Swiss francs (1.1369).—AFP
