Udal to lead Middlesex

LONDON, Sept 3: Former England off-spinner Shaun Udal will captain Middlesex for the remainder of the season in the absence of the injured Ed Smith, the county cricket side confirmed on Tuesday.

Ed Joyce had been deputising for Smith, who has an ankle injury, but is now considering his long-term future after a meeting with club officials.

“It’s a huge honour. We have a lot to play for during the remainder of the season, and we will be fully focused on winning our remaining fixtures,” said 39-year-old Udal.

Chief executive Vinny Codrington added: “In addition to Shaun’s appointment, we are pleased to report Ed Joyce had a meeting with Ian Lovett, club chairman, and myself where Ed wished for more time to consider his long-term future.—AFP
