KARACHI: Scuffles mar ST rally

Published August 15, 2008

KARACHI, Aug 14: Tension gripped Submarine Chowk in Defence following a clash-like situation between the Rangers and participants of a rally.

Giving the details of the incident, the police said that a rally of the Sunni Tehrik brought out from M.A. Jinnah Road was supposed to terminate at Abdullah Shah Ghazi shrine. They said that when the rally reached Submarine Chowk, young participants of the rally riding motorcycles started fighting with each other over some issue.

To control the situation, two Rangers personnel from a Rangers mobile deputed nearby intervened. Instead of paying heed to the law-enforcers, the youth got engaged in an altercation with the Rangers. The situation forced the Rangers to resort to firing into the air, police said. The firing triggered tension and some participants of the rally in retaliation also resorted to firing into the air. The area police arrived on the spot and convinced the participants of the rally to proceed peacefully.—Staff Reporter
