LAHORE, Aug 11: A PML-Q leader on Monday refuted the PPP co-chairman's allegation that $700 million coming from the US for war on terror had been squandered by President Musharraf or somebody else.

Ishaq Khan Khakwani, a former minister of state, said there was a fool-proof system to get the assistance and spend it and thus there was no possibility of its being squandered by anybody.

He said since he had been part of the government for quite some time, he knew the entire procedure followed by both the countries.

The PML-Q leader said Pakistan first spent the money from its own kitty on war on terror and then sent the bill to the US to get the amount reimbursed. He said the bill was cleared by the US government, the Pentagon and other relevant institutions. The reimbursed money was sent to the finance ministry of Pakistan which then informed the defence ministry and the chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee.

The Pakistan government, keeping its needs in mind, could spend the amount according to its own priorities. But since the reimbursed amount was spent by the government from its own sources, there was just no possibility of the amount being squandered.Alleging that the PPP leader had been misled by the officials who had given him the wrong information, Khakwani called for action against such people. — Political Correspondent
