WASHINGTON, May 6: Former Sindh chief minister Abdullah Shah is believed to be among persons whose extradition is sought by the government of Pakistan from the United States.

The extradition issue, as reported in Dawn on Monday, will be among subjects to be discussed by Interior Minister Moinuddin Haider during his visit to the United States beginning on Tuesday.

The names of Mr Shah and of Mr Shahzad Munawwar, a close relative of a PPP leader, have previously been mentioned in connection with Pakistan’s extradition requests, and it is unclear whether they are still in the US. The relevant papers relating to the two are reliably learnt to have been submitted to the US justice department. Some other people may also be wanted by Pakistan, including a top former bureaucrat.

The only wanted person actually extradited from the US so far is former naval chief Admiral Mansurul Haq, who was flown out of here several months ago. He is already reported to have entered into a deal with the National Accountability Bureau to return part of the money he was alleged to have embezzled in return for his freedom. The main purpose of Moinuddin Haider’s visit will be to sign a memorandum of understanding with Attorney-General John Ashcroft setting up a joint Pakistan-US Working Group on Law Enforcement.
