PESHAWAR, Aug 6: The federal government has supplied 2,000 tents to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for provision to people displaced by the recent floods.

This was told at a meeting held under NWFP Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti on Wednesday, according to an official handout.

The statement said 25,000 families had been affected and 12,000 houses had been damaged -- 8,000 completely and 4,000 partially.

The chief minister directed for distribution of 3,000 packets of relief goods, including flour bags, rice, pulses, ghee, sugar and black tea, among the affected families.

The meeting was told that the NDMA had also been asked for supply of 46,000 blankets and towels.

It said the chief minister had updated Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on the situation and damages caused by the floods in the province and appealed for federal government’s assistance. The prime minister had assured support to the provincial government in its efforts to provide relief to the affected families, according to the handout.

Meanwhile, the provincial government has established NWFP Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to raise money for the affected people.

National and international welfare organisations, NGOs and philanthropists have been appealed for contribution to the relief fund, the accounts of which have been opened in all the branches of the State Bank of Pakistan, treasury offices and schedule banks.
