Tail-end farmers want water

DADU, July 25: Tail-end growers of the Johi branch canal on Friday held a demonstration against what they called artificial shortage of water in 20 waterways in Johi.

Abadgar Association Johi chairman Ghulam Qadir Rind who was leading the protesters said that the water flow at the head of the Dadu Canal and Johi Branch had improved but tail-end growers of the Johi branch were not getting their share of water.

Because of the situation, he said, paddy crop could not be cultivated in Johi during the current season.

He alleged that irrigation officials were selling water to influential farmers.

Imamuddin Rustamani said that the Chhinni waterway was dry and over 10,000 people were facing the problem of drinking water shortage.

Mehar Gadhi said that there was no water in the Chejani waterway.The protester also observed a token hunger strike.

INJURED: Seven people were injured by the firing of unidentified people on the Borari road on Friday.

According to sources, armed men blocked the road and started snatching cash and valuables from the people there. They opened fire when some of the people offered resistance.

The injured, Shaman Mangi, Ghulam Mohammad Abbasi, Mohammad Hassan, Ayaz Junejo, Usman, Bakhshal and Sikandar, were taken to the LUMHS hospital.

In another incident, unidentified armed men kidnapped five employees of a private company from the Betto road.
