HARIPUR, July 6: The local police claimed to have apprehended four alleged suicide bombers from the Tarbela Lake area on Saturday evening.

Sources said that the alleged bombers’ target was some sensitive point of Haripur. They were shifted to some undisclosed place for interrogation and were expected to be produced before the media on Monday.District Police Officer Nasir Mehmood Satti confirmed arrest of the ‘suicide attackers’ but avoided to give details about the explosive materials recovered from their possession.

However, sources in the police department said that an unknown vehicle had dropped four men with short beards on the side of Tarbela Lake near Khalabat Township at around 6pm.

Residents informed the police about the presence of suspects in the area.

The Khalabat Township police cordoned off the area and reportedly arrested them. The suspects, according to an insider, were from the NWFP and were wearing explosive vests.

It may be recalled that a few kilometres away from the place of arrest, a suicide bomber had struck the mess of the Special Services Group Brigade Headquarters in Tarbela Dam, killing 16 commandoes and injuring 29 others on September 14, 2007.
