KARACHI, June 20: The excise department collected Rs1,629.729 million on account of levies and excise duty from the sale of liquor brought from various distilleries during the last year.

This was stated by the Sindh Minister for Excise and Taxation, Mukesh Kumar Chawla, while replying to a question of MPA Arif Mustafa Jatoi, during a question hour in the assembly on Friday.

The minister also gave details regarding the name, nature and total number of taxes collected during the period from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2007. He said the department received a total of Rs9,122.674 million that included Rs2,055.61 million collected as the motor vehicle tax, Rs1,629.729 million as excise enactments, Rs4,978.95 million as infrastructure cess, Rs107.47 million as cotton fee, Rs184.977 million as professional tax, and Rs165.938 million collected as hotel tax.—APP
