NOTTINGHAM (England), June 7: James Anderson finished with seven for 43 as England enforced the follow-on after bowling New Zealand out for 123 on day three of the third and final Test at Trent Bridge on Saturday.

New Zealand, resuming on 96 for six in replying to England’s first innings 364, lost their last three wickets for no runs.

England, 1-0 up in the series, need only to avoid defeat to win the series.

Daniel Vettori was caught at first slip by Andrew Strauss off Ryan Sidebottom for seven, before Stuart Broad claimed two wickets in his only over of the morning.

Broad, playing on his home ground, first had Kyle Mills well caught by Kevin Pietersen at head height in the gully with his third ball and then two balls later he bowled Iain O’Brien with a perfect out-swinger.

Anderson completed the rout when he trapped Gareth Hopkins lbw for 15 as New Zealand capitulated from 123 for seven to 123 all out an hour before tea.

There was no play before lunch because of rain and bad light.

On Friday Anderson, who struck his highest Test score of 28, claimed all the wickets to fall when bad light stopped play 18 overs short of the scheduled close.

It was Anderson’s unlikely batting heroics that earlier took England to 364 after put on 76 with Stuart Broad (64) in a damaging eighth-wicket partnership for the tourists that was not broken until 100 minutes into the day.

Anderson bowled Aaron Redmond (1) and Brendon McCullum (9) with pitched-up out-swingers before tea as both looked to play through midwicket only to be squared up by the moving ball.

McCullum’s delivery swung less and he should have played straighter.

After tea, Ross Taylor edged to Kevin Pietersen at gully for 21 and three balls later Daniel Flynn, who underwent dental surgery after being hit in the mouth by Anderson in the second test, was lbw for nought after surviving a vocal lbw appeal on his second ball.

Opener Jamie How followed his fellow batsmen into the pavilion when edging an Anderson delivery, which left him off the seam, to Ambrose for 40.

Number seven Jacob Oram looked uneasy throughout his innings and showed little footwork against the moving ball. He eventually wafted at a loose one to give Anderson his best figures, beating his five for 42 against India.

England were boosted on day one by 115 by Kevin Pietersen after they were struggling at 86 for five.
