HYDERABAD, June 2: A group of students protesting against the murder of a fellow student on the Sindh University’s Jamshoro campus over a fortnight ago disrupted the semester examinations by stopping busses from taking students to the campus on Monday.

The group detained the university’s buses at Wahdat Colony, Autobahn road, Poonam Petrol Pump, Naseem Nagar, Old Campus and City Gate Hotel, and stopped students from going to Jamshoro to appear in examinations. They did not even allow the teachers’ bus to proceed to the campus.

The university has 110 point buses which bring students from Hyderabad to Jamshoro and vice-versa. According to a source in the university only three buses managed to sneak out of the city but they, too, were stopped near the university.

The group had staged a demonstration outside the press club on Thursday and issued an ultimatum to the university that if the killers of Abdul Nabi Brohi, who was gunned down on the campus on May 14, were not arrested, they would boycott the ongoing semester examinations.

But another group of students, who staged a demonstration outside the press club on Monday in protest against the forced boycott, said that more than 95 per cent of students wanted to appear in examinations but they were being stopped by a handful of boycotters.

The university authorities decided not to bow to the boycotters. A meeting presided over by Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mazharul Haq Siddiqui and attended by DIG of Hyderabad police, Jamshoro DPO and key officials of the university decided that the examinations would resume on Tuesday at all the institutes and departments of the university.

The university’s registrar informed the meeting that the university had taken measures against boycott threats. Some miscreants stopped the university’s buses at Qasimabad, Wahdat Colony and City Gate hotel and threatened students not to appear in examinations, he told the meeting.

The meeting decided to take strict action against the students who were disturbing the university’s peaceful atmosphere and instigating boycott. The controller of examination has already announced that examinations will start from June 3, as per schedule, and the paper scheduled to be taken on June 2 will now be taken on June 21.

The university, meanwhile, issued show-cause notices to Abdul Razzaq Brohi, Noman Bhalai and Agha Hussain for misconduct and creating harassment at the campus and the university’s discipline committee directed them to explain their position in writing and appear before it during its next meeting.
