MANSEHRA, May 21: Amid pandemonium and protest over delay of polling, a candidate supported by the Pakistan People’s Party was elected the district naib nazim here on Wednesday.

The seat had fallen vacant after incumbent Mufti Kifayatullah was elected a member of the provincial assembly in the Feb 18 general election. Atiqur Rehman Jahangiry was elected the new naib nazim with a big margin. The district council session was summoned at 10am for the election, but the proceedings started at 11am because most of councillors arrived late.

Some councillors had asked returning officer Zahid Mehmood to delay the election process for 30 minutes till the arrival of the remaining councillors, but Amjid Salar Khan, a candidate for the naib nazim’s seat, opposed it.
