HYDERABAD, May 14: One student was killed when two groups of students clashed in a Sindh University hostel late on Tuesday night following a dispute over whether to boycott the ongoing examinations in protest against frequent power breakdowns and shortage of water.

Earlier, a large number of students held a demonstration on the Indus Highway in protest against loadshedding.

On their return to the hostel, they proposed to boycott the semester examinations, another group of students opposed the proposal which led to a heated argument.

The Sindh People’s Student Federation, the student wing of the ruling PPP, is reported to be against holding protests and demonstrations and the proposal to boycott examinations saying that it would undermine the government.

The argument turned into an armed clash in which a BSc Part-III student, Abdul Nabi, was hit by a bullet.

He was rushed to the Liaquat University Hospital in Jamshoro and later to the hospital’s Hyderabad branch when his condition deteriorated. He died on his way to the hospital.

Jamshoro police have registered an FIR on the complaint of Mohammad Ishaque against eight people, including student welfare officer Rafique Brohi.

After the death of the student, some protesters broke the windowpanes of the ICU ward and damaged some other property of the hospital.
