DARRA ADAMKHEL, May 10: Militants blew up the two-storey building of Government Degree College for boys in Darra town on Saturday.

The college is adjacent to the Spina Thana Fort where hundreds of personnel of the Frontier Constabulary and Frontier Corps are stationed.

“It is very strange that saboteurs planted explosives in the building, but security forces remained unaware of it,” said a resident.

Witnesses said that explosives were planted in the entire building, including laboratories, library and principal’s office which went off at around 4:30am, damaging all classrooms, furniture, books and equipment.

Militants have virtually taken over the Frontier Region of Darra Adamkhel and have been carrying out subversive activities without being encountered by the security forces.

They have destroyed two degree colleges, four high schools, seven middle schools and three primary schools in the area.

Girls’ schools in Akhurwal and Shiraki areas have been closed because of a ban imposed on women teachers by the militants to attend their schools.

Local people said that militants were patrolling the area freely despite deployment of army and paramilitary troops there.

Authorities have imposed a night time curfew in the area and closed the Friendship Tunnel for traffic.
