LAHROE, April 26: The Lahore High Court on Friday asked a lawyer who wanted references against the President, the provincial governor and the district Nazim of Lahore to approach the National and Regional Accountability Bureaus.

“The Bureau shall act in accordance with law”, Justice Karamat Nazir Bhandari said in his order disposing of a writ petition filed by Advocate Mian Hanif Tahir. The petitioner said public money was being spent on the referendum campaign and those responsible for it should face the process of accountability.

DISMISSED: Justice Chaudhry Ijaz Ahmad dismissed as not maintainable a contempt petition moved by Advocate MD Tahir against Chief Justice Falak Sher.

The petitioner contended that the CJ had committed contempt by not fixing his petitions against the establishment of the LHC’s Multan, Rawalpindi and Bahawalpur benches and for providing him LHC guards and bailiffs to conduct raids on police stations across the province. He said the police routinely tortured suspects and detained law-abiding citizens and offenders alike.

Rejecting the lawyer’s plea that superior court judges enjoyed no immunity in contempt and criminal matters, the court observed that no process under the law could issue against them.—Staff Reporter
