BAHAWALPUR, April 23: A man was allegedly tortured to death by his in-laws to avenge his marrying their daughter by choice in Kalar village near Ahmedpur East on Tuesday.

Ghulam Rasool married Tasleam Mai for love but her parents disapproved of the marriage. Later, a panchayat (village’s conciliatory council) intervened and the girl was sent back to her parents’ home without breaking the marriage.

Her relatives with the support of local influential Abdul Wahid and his accomplices Akbar, Afzal and Fazal later abducted Ghulam Rasool and allegedly shaved his beard and moustaches off and subjected him to severe torture. He later succumbed to his wounds.

The Ahmedpur East Sadar police registered a case. However, no arrest has been made in this connection.

SENTENCED: An anti-terrorism court judge on Wednesday sentenced one Abdul Zahir, alias Qari Zafar, to life imprisonment and fined him Rs200,000 for killing Rahim Yar Khan jail superintendent Jam Azizur Rehman and injuring wardens Muhammed Nawaz and Abdul Majid.
