ISLAMABAD, March 10: Senior PPP leader Ahmed Mukhtar on Monday said it was not difficult for Asif Ali Zardari to get elected from a constituency vacated by a party member and become the prime minister.

In an interview to a private TV channel, he said he himself could vacate his seat for Mr Zardari. He, however, added that Mr Zardari had said time and again that he was not interested in premiership.

Mr Mukhtar said if the PPP co-chairman really wanted to become the prime minister he did not need to wait for three months.

“Mr Zardari can surely win from a number of constituencies and become the prime minister the following day,” he added. When asked about his own chances of becoming the prime minister, Mr Mukhtar said he had no right to the post and it was solely the discretion of Mr Zardari to nominate a party member.

“All MPs-elect who met Mr Zardari have authorised him to take important decisions.”

Traditionally, he said, the PPP’s central executive committee had never taken decisions about the nomination of prime minister, speaker, deputy speaker, etc., adding that in the past all such decisions had been taken by the head of the party.—APP
