Women in sports

AMMAN, March 7: Top sporting officials and former Olympic medallists gather in Jordan this week to promote women’s participation in sport, organisers said Friday, on the eve of International Women’s Day.

They will also examine how female athletes can serve as role models for young girls, at the Fourth International Olympic Committee (IOC) World Conference on Women and Sport, which kicks off on Saturday on the shores of the Dead Sea.

More than 500 delegates from 150 countries, including IOC President Jacque Rogge and former Olympic medallists, will take part in the two-day meeting, a statement said.

The conference will also discuss how to address HIV-AIDS through sport, and how culture determines women’s access to sport.—AFP
