SYDNEY, March 2: Sri Lanka’s celebrations following their tri-series win over Australia were soured on Sunday when they were fined for a slow over-rate.

The tourists ended a long sequence of losses to the Australians when they beat the world champions by 13 runs at Melbourne on Friday, only to be fined for their over-rate.

International Cricket Council (ICC) match referee Jeff Crowe ruled that Sri Lanka had been one over short of their target when time allowances were taken into account.

Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene was docked 10 percent of his match fee, while each of his players were fined five percent, in accordance with ICC regulations.

The sport’s governing body has vowed to crackdown on slow over rates and have already fined Australia twice this summer.

Sri Lanka had already been knocked out of contention for the best-of-three finals, which began on Sunday with India defeating Australia.—Reuters
