KARACHI: KWSB urged to plug leakages

Published February 23, 2008

KARACHI, Feb 22: Residents of various water deficit areas complained that Karachi Water and Sewerage Board officials seemed least interested in plugging pipeline leakages despite their repeated complaints lodged with the KWSB in this regard.

Voicing concern over the leaking pipelines, they apprehended that sewage might seep into lines supplying potable water to their localities and play havoc with public health. Besides, they said that leakages caused extensive damage to roads and streets.

Most of such complaints have been received from the residents of North Karachi, New Karachi, Manghopir, Site, Shershah, Landhi, Korangi, Mehmoodabad, Akhtar Colony, Lines Area, PECHS blocks 2 and 6, Surjani and different blocks of Gulshan-i-Iqbal and Gulistan-i-Jauhar.

Attributing the cause of low-pressure water supply to the leaking pipelines, they said that water got accumulated on roads and streets, creating potholes and craters in the roads and streets where it remain accumulated for days.

Residents of Gulshan-i-Iqbal’s blocks 13-A, -B, -C and -D said that a number of streets of their localities had become bumpy and developed potholes, causing jerks to motorists. A visit to the University Road near Bait-ul-Mukkarram Masjid showed that water seeping out from a leaking pipeline had damaged a portion of the road.
