NAWABSHAH: Farmers seek water

Published January 29, 2008

NAWABSHAH, Jan 28: Dozens of growers of Gujjar Canal and Dhoronaro Shakh staged a protest demonstration and observed three-hour token hunger strike outside the press club here on Monday.

Hakim Ali Khaskheli, Mohammad Ramzan and other farmers said that water supply to the canals was suspended from December 27, 2007 to January 6 for annual silt clearance and maintenance but the supply had not been restored yet.

They said that as a result their crops were drying and there was shortage of drinking water in Nawabshah city.

STUDENTS: Students of Quaid-i-Awam University of Engineering and Technology boycotted classes and staged a sit-in at the campus on Monday.

They were protesting against lack of facilities at the university.

Sami Brohi, Basheer Dahani and other protesters said that the university administration had failed to provide basic facilities to the students. They complained of late announcement of results and shortage of classrooms.

ARREST: The Sakrand police on Monday arrested two men who had reached National Bank of Pakistan’s local branch with the intention of committing robbery.
