MIRPURKHAS, April 7: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) feels the referendum is an exercise seriously violative of the Constitution, which will lead the country into anarchy, and hence, the party was against it.

The PPP central committee member, Nawab Yousuf Talpur said this while talking to party workers of the Mirpurkhas division in Manjhakar, says a press release.

He said that since the PPP was the party that gifted this Constitution to the nation, therefore, it will stand against any violation of the Constitution with its democratic strength.

He said the referendum will severely damage the integrity of the nation as varying responses from the provinces will create severe cracks in the federation which the PPP being the largest political party of the country will never allow to happen.

He said President Pervez Musharraf was trying to exploit the economic turnaround primarily born out of the Sept 11 incident to elongate his autocratic rule.

He said the holding of referendum five months ahead of the general elections was a gimmick to give birth to “king’s parties” but those who changed loyalties overnight and left their parties in the lurch will not stand with him at the end.

The PPP leader said that military dictators were used to exploiting national interests for their personal political goals.

He exhorted the party workers and the general public to be vigilant to the situation.

He informed them that the entire party cadre was fully behind the leadership of Benazir Bhutto, whose sacrifices for democratic rights for the masses had surpassed even that of the freedom leaders of several nations.
