PESHAWAR, April 7: Two employees of the Workers Welfare Board, NWFP, were suspended for their alleged involvement in financial irregularities and inflicting heavy losses to the national exchequer.

The irregularities have been committed through the award of contracts of different projects meant for the welfare of labour community, including construction of schools, colleges and hospitals, according to an official statement.

It says that these elements never hesitated to continue the malpractice by awarding contracts over and above 14 per cent of the original cost of the projects.

However, due to timely intervention by provincial minister Mohsin Aziz, these contracts were re-tendered and awarded to the government-approved contractors in a transparent manner at a lesser rate from 10 to 15 per cent of the approved rates, thus saving Rs40 to Rs50 million.

The minister has warned that no obstacle in the way of implementing the reforms agenda launched by the NWFP Governor, Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah, in the government departments would be tolerated.
